Watkins Sweet Rolls
Never before have there been sweet rolls soooo good,
yet so low in calories. It's hard to believe these aren't forbidden. Try with all three
fillings. For the version pictured, just roll dough into "ropes" and twist into
a spiral roll before filling.
2 packages active dry yeast
1/2 cup warm water
1/2 cup skim milk, scalded
t Tbsp. butter
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. Watkins
Cinnamon
1 1/2 tsp. Watkins Vanilla,
Original Double Strength
1 teas. / 5 ml Watkins
Butter Extract
1 egg, separated
2 1/2 - 2 3/4 cups unbleached white flour
Soften yeast in warm water. Combine milk, butter, sugar
and Watkins Cinnamon in large mixing bowl; cool to lukewarm. Blend in Watkins Vanilla, egg
yolk, and yeast. Gradually add flour to form a stiff dough. Knead on floured surface until
smooth and satiny - 5-7 minutes. Cover; et rise in a warm place until light and doubled in
size, about 1 hour. Divide dough into 16 pieces, shape into balls. Place on greased cookie
sheets. Press deep hollow in center of roll with fingers; brush with beaten egg white.
Fill with Spicy Apple, Lemon or Maple Nut
filling.
Makes 16 servings
Calories in basic dough 121, sodium 26 mg.
Spicy Apple Filling
Heavenly apple pie taste; the runaway favorite. Notice there's no refined sugar added.
1 1/2 cups prepared, chopped apples
1/3 cup frozen apple juice concentrate, thawed
1 Tbsp. Watkins
Butterscotch Dessert Mix
1/2 tsp. Watkins
Cinnamon
1/4 tsp. Watkins
Nutmeg
1/4 tsp. Watkins
Allspice
Combine all ingredients in saucepan. Cook, stirring
occasionally until apples are tender; cool.
Makes 3/4 cup - 16 servings
Calories per serving 16, sodium 14 mg.
Lemon Filling
As good as commercial lemon filled rolls, but so much lighter.
1/4 cup cold water
1 Tbsp. Watkins
Lemon Dessert Mix
1 egg yolk, slightly beaten
2 Tbsp. sugar
Combine all ingredients in 1 quart saucepan; blend well.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture comes to a boil and thickens.
Remove from heat.
Makes 3/4 cup - 16 servings

Maple Nut Filling
A popular flavor with a bit of added crunch.
1/4 cup cold water
2 Tbsp. Watkins
Butterscotch Dessert Mix
2 Tbsp. sugar
1 egg yolk, slightly beaten
1/2 tsp. Watkins
Maple Flavor
3 Tbsp. finely chopped pecans
Combine water, Watkins Butterscotch
Dessert Mix, sugar, and egg yolk in a 1 quart saucepan; blend well. Cook over
medium heat, stirring constantly until mixter comes to a boil and thickens. Remove from
heat; stir in Watkins
Maple Flavor and pecans
Makes 1 cup - 16 servings
