Apple Turnovers
These turnovers are VERY low in fat! Instead of brushing
phyllo dough with melted butter, this recipe uses Watkins Cooking
Spray.
12 Sheets of Phyllo Dough
1 Can of Apple Pie Filling
1/2 Cup Sugar mixed with 1/2 - 1 teas. Watkins Apple Bake Seasoning
Phyllo dough comes in a long, skinny box in the freezer
section. You need to thaw the dough in its box before you use it. Before you start working
with the phyllo dough, wet a dish towel with cool water, wring it out, and have it on hand
to cover the dough. Phyllo dough is paper thin, and will dry and crack quickly if left
uncovered.
Take one sheet of phyllo dough, spray with Watkins
Cooking Spray, and sprinkle with the Apple bake/sugar
mixture (lightly if you're watching your sugar intake, heavily if you have a sweet tooth).
Take another phyllo sheet, spray and sprinkle. Now fold the dough in thirds lengthwise
(bring the right side toward the middle, spray and sprinkle that section, bring the left
side over, spray and sprinkle.
Now you have a long, skinny piece of dough about
4-5" wide and 15-18" long. Take 2-3 Tbsp. of your apple pie filling and put it
at one end of the dough, about 1" from the edge. Then fold it up at a 45 degree
angle, as if you were folding a flag. Keep on folding at a 45 degree angle, and you will
completely wrap the pie filling into the dough, and have a nice little triangular
turnover. Place on a cookie sheet, seam side down, spray and sprinkle one more time.
Repeat this process 5 more times to make 6 turnovers.
Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
